I was worried about the ground as he's a better horse on better ground. He worked in cheek-pieces the other day and flew in them and while there was no point having them on today, he'll have them on in the Gold Cup,. Bryan said from the second last to the line he was only getting going. He was free and exuberant in the early days and while it's not good to look at, the last quarter (of his races) is his best now. He's a better horse in the second half of the season and with a bit of better ground and cheek-pieces, the Gold Cup is the plan. If he's good enough or not I don't know, but roll on March.

he's a fair horse and Bryan (Cooper) said he never came out of second gear but at the same time he never took hold of the bridle. He only had a school around and I just thought if we let him lengthen we'd have seen the real him but all he could do was win.

Fair play to Punchestown, they have done a tremendous job on the ground. We have been waiting on this day all summer to start the season off. Bryan said he took a blow after the fifth last but he's never come off the bridle. We'll look forward to the rest of the season. There are a lot of big races to look at and there is the million pounds bonus in England that we will have to discuss. He's in the JNWine Champion Chase at Down Royal but Road To Riches will probably go there. I'm sure Eddie and Michael (O'Leary) and Noel (Meade) and myself, and Willie (Mullins) also has a few Gold Cup horses (for Gigginstown) will all have a chat and we'll make a plan. The Cheltenham Gold Cup is my long term plan. Eddie got his way last year and he went for the Ryanair but he'll definitely go for the Gold Cup this year. I still believe he's not a horse for real heavy ground. I think he's better on a nicer surface. All his big wins bar one there was a bit of good in it. We said today that we would get him settled. He was a bit buzzy in this race last year. Roi Du Mee has lost his Grade 1 penalty this season which is a massive help and we will look at all those Grade 2 and 3 races. He's been a great servant, and the softer the ground the better.

I feel sorry for Bryan but he had to go with the horse who was third in the Gold Cup, and I'm delighted for Paul who has been associated with me for a long time and I'm delighted to be able to give him a big winner. We were nervous about running him after Aintree but it's a Gold Cup and we took our chance. I should be safe in the job for another year after that! . It's very special to win, and this is what it's all about. They went flat to the boards all the way, and Paul said he gave him a squeeze turning in, and he came back on it. From the last to the line he's put seven lengths between them. Noel O'Brien (handicapper) told me before the race that he was the best horse in the race if he ran up to his rating but I think that was even better than Aintree. He proved he stays. I'll worry about Cheltenham next March, and the most important thing is that he's okay in the morning. He came out of Aintree bouncing, and it was really Michael and Eddie that gave me the confidence to come here. The owners have that many good horses at the moment that they may want to keep them away from each other and I wouldn't mind going to England with him.

That's great. He deserves that in fairness to him. He's always gotten plenty of stick and people have said he's been disappointing but he's a dual Grade 1 winner now. I'll have to talk to Michael and Eddie but if I had my way he wouldn't run until Cheltenham and go straight for the Ryanair. I have to discuss it with the owners as they have a lot of horses. He won't go to the King George. He's a year older now which makes a difference but he was never a bad horse last year and things didn't work out for him. He might have had a bit much last year and we'll try and train him differently. He had to do it the hard way today. They all came to beat him but he picked up and galloped all the way to the line.

to be fair Gigginstown opted for this race but he beat Road To Riches last year so he wouldn't have been out of place in the Grade 1. I thought it was a good performance and he jumped well the whole way. I liked the way he put distance on them from the third last to the line.

We've liked the horse all along and I'm delighted he's won a Grade 1. Punchestown (2nd to Morning Assembly) just knocked the edge off him. He's a smashing big horse and I've been very lucky that Gigginstown has given me a lot of nice young horses to train so it's nice to win a Grade 1 for them. He won't go anywhere over Christmas but he might go to Leopardstown at the end of January. I'm not sure he's an out-an-out three miler myself. He done it well . he battled and he jumped great so we're happy with him. It mightn't have looked before that he was a battler but he did that today. I'll chat to Michael and Eddie (O'Leary) but we've no plans for him at the minute.

He idled a little bit in front but Davy was very happy with him. He will probably come back here for the Grade 1 Navan Novice Hurdle (Sunday December 16th) which is over two and a half miles. We will definitely be stepping him up in trip. We will take it one step at a time with him and it's nice to get that race out of the way.
