D.A. McCormack, rider of Corker Hill, trained by Noel Lawlor, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount received a slight check down the back and didn't travel thereafter. The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Elusive In Paris, ridden by Gary Paul Halpin, and trained by John James Feane. Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer concerned. Gary Paul Halpin, stated that his instructions were to get his mount settled and creep into the race, the horse was having his first try at this distance and he was conscious of the horse getting the trip. In the race he raced towards the rear and was caught up with some back markers when turning into the straight. When he did get a clear run he squeezed his mount along and the horse galloped on but didn't pick up significantly for pressure. He stated that he had ridden the horse previously with similar tactics at Ballinrobe and the horse had won. John James Feane, confirmed the instructions given to the rider. He stated that he had previously claimed this horse and that they were still finding out about him, he also stated that the horse had been waited-with at Ballinrobe and had won. He felt that perhaps the horse does his best work while on the bridle. The Stewards also received a report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer who stated that he had examined Elusive In Paris post race and the horse had been found to have sustained skin scrapes to its off-fore leg but was otherwise post race normal. Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards noted the explanations offered. The Stewards received a report from the Clerk of the Scales, Mr W Fleming, that R.P. Downey, rider of Smart Alec, had failed to present himself to weigh out within the fixed time for his ride in the first race contrary to Rule 196. Evidence was heard from the rider concerned who stated that he had been engaged to school a horse prior to racing and had given himself plenty of time to do so however the horse he was due to work beside had bolted and had delayed proceedings and as a result it had taken far longer than usual to complete the piece of work. Having considered the evidence, the Stewards found R.P. Downey in breach of Rule 196 and advised him regarding his future responsibilities in this regard.
