FormscanBy Tom Weekes - MIGHT BITE has arguably shown the best levels of form and could take the beating in an open looking Gold Cup. He had been lightly raced prior to his 2016/17 novice chase campaign but did show enormous potential then and did extraordinarily well to win the RSA Novice Chase last year when hanging badly on the run-in. He has since confirmed his undoubted ability and was a good, if not brilliant, winner of the King George last December. He goes well on reasonably soft ground, stays very well and has the class and consistency to win today. Our Duke lacks the consistency of the selection but on his day, namely in winning the Irish National last season and at Gowran latest, is a strong contender. He was operated for a kissing spine following his flop reappearance run at Down Royal in November and seemed to come back to his best when winning at Gowran last month. He is a Grade 1 winning novice chaser and beat Wednesday's RSA winner at Gowran but one possible concern today is he has yet to make an impact at top Grade 1 level. While Might Bite did extraordinarily well to win the RSA, Killultagh Vic is another who once performed miracles to win a novice chase at Leopardstown in January 2016 and while he has had an injury-interrupted career, confirmed that novice potential when an unlucky final fence faller in the Irish Gold Cup. He is a now a proven high class class chaser but this represents another step up in class and therefore, a step into the unknown class-wise. Edwulf won that Irish Gold Cup but also steps up in class and might find a few too strong. Road To Respect has a slight edge over Outlander (second in the Irish Gold Cup) but in truth Outlander would be a surprise winner on overall form and Road To Respect could himself prove vulnerable to a few rivals. Total Recall is thoroughly progressive and while he takes his biggest step up in class here, cannot totally be dismissed with proven ability to stay well on testing ground. Native River is a mud-lark and is also a strong stayer. He finished third in last season's Gold Cup and while he possibly lacks a gear to win, his best chance would also be if the ground were to turn heavy. Definitly Red has a rating of 167 and while that seems high given the races he has won, he is a proven performer on testing ground and stays very well. He has flopped twice at this festival though but could also get into the reckoning were the ground to turn heavy. Djakadam hasn't looked himself this season and would be an unlikely winner while Minella Rocco, second last year, is another who has yet to show his old sparkle this term and might also struggle.
