The Cormac Farrell-trained Pro Bono got on top close home to land a dramatic contest for the two-mile maiden hurdle at Down Royal.

The race complexion changed four out when leader Pahlavi was carried out by a loose horse.

At the same flight Valsorpresa s saddle slipped forward and jockey Danny Gilligan was without irons heading to the next flight. Master Splinter who had led to halfway, inherited the lead again four out but was strongly pressed at the next.

He looked to have done enough when leading down to the final flight but was collared late on by Pro Bono, who got up for a neck success under Philip Donovan.

Donovan said: "He has (come home to good effect), we kind of expected him to win but didn't think we would have to go about it that way!

"I'm very pleased with him and I'm delighted for the owner, Patrick Hayes, who is a good friend of mine. Delighted to get one up for him.

"First-time tongue-tie and good ground was a big help."
