Robbie Power continued his ride on the crest of a wave as Bobabout came from an unlikely position to claim the opening JLT Handicap Hurdle at Punchestown.

The Jessica Harrington-trained gelding was badly hampered by the fall of Orchard Road four from home, in the two-miler, and was knocked back to the rear.

The 8/1 shot made up ground again turning for home but found himself short of room on the rail.

Power got a clear run going to the last and chased down Runyon Rattler in the closing stages, edging the duel close home for a nose success.

“These distances are getting shorter and shorter. We went from a head to a short-head yesterday to a nose today. It's not good for the nerves,” said Harrington.

“That was the most amazing run because he was virtually brought down at the fourth last and Robert said it crossed his mind to pull him up.

“I just couldn't think he could win from there and he got stopped again before turning in.

“He loved that ground and today was the first day he really jumped. During the winter he couldn't jump off the heavy ground.

“He had a little blow out on Sunday on the Flat. Again he was very keen on Sunday. He's probably better when they go a really good gallop and he does settle. He'll learn to settle in time.”

Jack Kennedy was stood down after his fall from Orchard Road.

Turf Club senior medical officer Dr Adrian McGoldrick later said:- “Jack Kennedy has a soft tissue injury to his neck and right lower leg but he should be okay to ride tomorrow.”
