Jake Peter came home from an unpromising position to grab first prize in the Irish Examiner Apprentice Handicap over an extended mile and six furlongs at Killarney.
He was seventh, and ridden, with just under a furlong and a-half to go, but really found his stride inside the final furlong.
The nine-year-old gelding came with a sustained rattle under Alan Persse and mugged Chatterbox in the final strides.
The winner was returned at 18/1 having been available at 40/1 this morning. Chatterbox went off at 5/1 while his stablemate, 16/5 favourite Barometer finished a close third.
Trainer Mark Cahill said: "He was never working as well for the past couple of weeks, Selena my partner rides him and Alan came in and rode him work and was delighted with him.
"We had him in Tramore last Saturday, but I messed up the vaccinations - I had them done, but hadn't it up online in time. It worked out well though as if he got in at Tramore he wouldn't have ran today.
"He had been hitting the post since his last win (in 2019), but couldn't get his head in front. It is great to get that one over the line and we have 10 horses in training at the moment."
