Piri makes successful debut for Lyons

Fri 4th Nov 2011, 18:49

The opening 2yo Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden at Dundalk tonight went the way of Piri Wango who was making his racecourse debut for his trainer Ger Lyons.

The son of Choisir, who was sold for £20,000 at the Doncaster Bloodstock Sales in April of this year, made headway under Keagan Latham when ridden over two furlongs out.

He was only sixth a furlong from home but stayed on well to lead near the line, going on to score by a length and three parts from the 14/1 shot Pyrenean Music back in second. Fast Finian kept on well to take third a further length and a half back under Gary Carroll at 8/1 while the 9/2 favourite Nero Emperor could only manage a disappointing seventh.

The John Oxx trained newcomer Wasabi's House (7/1) under Johnny Murtagh didn't get the clearest of runs but still managed to take fourth.

The came in for plenty of market support this morning being backed from his opening show of 18/1 into 6/1, but drifted back out on track to 10/1 at the off.

Winning trainer Ger Lyons said afterwards: "He is a lovely horse. We bought him from Mark Dwyer. He has had shore shins and we gelded him.

"It didn't look like he would get to the racecourse this year but he had been coming to hand in the last six weeks.

"If we had finished in the first three it would have done me, especially with an 85 rated horse (Srucahan) in the race, but I knew if he ran to his mark he would go close.

"He has a mile written all over him but I though we would try him over six furlongs tonight."
