Mullins proves Some Gem
Teak was all the rage for division two of the Monard Handicap Hurdle but the 2/1 favourite (earlier available at 3/1) was edged out by Some Gem ridden by Danny Mullins for his uncle Tom, after a terrific tussle up the straight.
The pair were neck and neck going to the final flight where Some Gem (12/1) gained a slight, but ultimately decisive advantage, and Mullins' mount held the renewed effort of the “jolly” by a short-head.
The stewards enquired into possible interference as the two principals came close on the run-in but the placings remained unaltered. Strandfield Bay (14/1) was a further three and a half lengths away in third, with The Boss's Choice (25/1) another two lengths back in fourth.
Tom Mullins said: “She is a half-sister to Oscar Dan Dan, and that's the only reason I persevered. She is worth something now to breed from being by Flemensfirth as well. We'll keep her going for the summer. Danny gave her a great ride and he's really making his mark.”
