Modem justified favouritism in the Malton Handicap but he was made to work hard for his win.

The Jessica Harrington trained five-year-old was the only one punters wanted to know about.

He was 3/1 last night with Paddy Power but opened on-course this evening at just 11/8 before going off the clear 11/10 favourite in the colours of Turlough Blessing.

Settled in mid-division by Fran Berry (completing a double having earlier won aboard Western Boy he was closer in fifth with a circuit to race.

He improved to pressed leader Zemario from two furlongs out and the duo had a good battle from there with Modem just getting the upper hand close home to score by a neck.

Zemario had to settle for second under Pat Smullen for Joe Murphy at 12/1 while Asian Wing (20's to 16/1 on-course) kept on well in the closing stages to take third, a further three and a half lengths back, under Robbie Downey for Johnny Feane. St Peter's Square completed the placings a further half a length back in fourth under Seamie Heffernan for Eoin Doyle at 14/1.

Kate Harrington, daughter of Jessica, said afterwards: "He did it very well and the plan is the Galway Hurdle where we're hoping he'll sneak into the weights. He could also go for the Amateur Handicap on the Monday.

"He had to battle but it was his first run since March and he'll come on a lot for the run."
