Scott McCullagh bounced out smartly and made all the running on the Jarlath Fahey trained Boher Road to win the Treo Eile Retraining Racehorses Apprentice Handicap at Navan.
In a now familiar tactic employed by most winning riders on the afternoon, McCullagh came wide into the straight in search of the better ground on the stands side of the track.
Although at that point the race only looked to concern himself and eventual runner-up Bringsty the latter travelled much the better under Adam Caffrey.
McCullagh got lower in the saddle over a furlong out as Caffrey moved alongside on Bringsty but try as he might, Caffrey just couldn't find a way past the Fahey trained four-year-old.
Jarlath Fahey said: “It’s great to get that win for him. The race cut with a few non-runners but it was the main two that fought it out and he found enough to get the job done.
“His run in the Cork Derby suggested he had a chance in a race like this and the slower ground didn’t really matter. He goes on anything bar the extremes.
“Pat (McCarthy, owner/breeder) likes to have a runner in Galway so we might have a look at a mile and a half race there before going back over hurdles again.”
