Mademoiselle Penny a poignant winner

Mademoiselle Penny landed a touch when driven out by Danny Grant to take the mile and a half handicap at Tramore.

The three-year-old filly raced seventh as Mighty Whitey set the fractions. She made good headway into fourth inside the last half mile as she chased Flowing Air who had taken over at the head of affairs.

Grant rode Mademoiselle Penny into contention on the outside of Duke Of Medina and High Kicker with a furlong and a half to negotiate as Flowing Air weakened.

At the furlong marker High Kicker and Mademoiselle Penny knuckled down to their tasks with the latter holding a narrow lead.

She refused to yield the initiative and flashed past the post half a length to the good at 10/1. High Kicker took the runner-up spot at 7/1 with Brokopondo a further half a length away in third at 6/1.

Gary Phillips briefly lost an iron on Rockview Emperor who appeared to stumble as the pair raced in sixth on the turn approaching the straight. The 9/2 favourite came home sixth.

Mademoiselle Penny was backed from 16/1 to 8/1 before racing commenced on this twilight card.

Trainer Pat Flynn said: "She is the first horse I have for Bill (Foley) and he has two of them with me now. She is called after his deceased wife (Penny). Bill is just out of hospital so this is a good tonic for him.

"She is a nice filly and we were hoping today that she'd get the mile and a half. Danny thought she would and she got it well enough in the finish. We are delighted she won a race and we will just feel our way along with her now."

Mademoiselle Penny had raced three times over seven furlongs and twice at a mile before stepping up to a mile and three in Wexford last-time out. This was her first victory.

It was a second winner on the card for sire Lawman as Recollection took the second race.

G.J. Phillips, rider of Rockview Emperor trained by N Dooly, reported to the Clerk of Scales that his mount lost his action on the bend leaving the back straight.
