The 128-rated Lady Breffni (1/6 into 1/8) had to work for success in the Ladbrokes Get Your Daily Odds Boost Mares Maiden Hurdle at Punchestown.
Stable jockey Paul Townend is sitting out the action as he’s sore after a fall at Fairyhouse on Saturday, and Danny Mullins took the reins on Lady Breffni for his uncle Willie.
The Getaway Star’s defection (she was reported with a temperature) left Humble Glory as the winner’s closest market rival, and she kept the Closutton runner up to her work from before the last.
A length and quarter eventually separated Lady Breffni (2nd start for Mullins) from Gordon Elliott’s course bumper scorer Humble Glory, with nineteen lengths back to Stockdale in third.
“She's a nice mare, she had to pull out all the stops there,” said the winning trainer.
“She just had a few lackadaisical jumps but gave Danny a good jump at the last when he needed it, and he did need it. It's testing out there.
“She'll probably go back handicapping or we could look at a mares hurdle. My father's race at Leopardstown could be a possibility, it would be nice to win it one year!”
