The decision to lessen top-weight Limerick Lace s burden by 7lb with Aidan Kelly's claim proved more than prudent in the Grade B novice handicap chase in Naas.

Just the six horses went to post for this €45,000 contest as Percy Warner, Razzle Dazzle Love and Francin were ruled out. It Could Be You set the pace with Limerick Lace taking closer order in second with a circuit to go in this 2m4f assignment.

Limerick Lace came with her challenge to grab a narrow lead at the penultimate fence. She then didn't put in her best jump at the last and was pressed by Jody Ted but the six-year-old kept going for Kelly and hit the line two and a half lengths clear of the 5/1 runner-up who was partnered by Mark McDonagh on his return from injury.

The winner was well punted down to 5/6 favourite on the back of a decisive victory at Down Royal over a shorter trip last month.

Trainer Gavin Cromwell said: “She's a fine big mare and jumps well. She needed the 7lb to win, to be fair, and he gave her a smashing ride.

“It's a nice pot to win. She always has those mares' races and we'll see where we go now.”

When asked if they would target black-type he added: “Somewhere along the way and you'd imagine she's good enough for it.”
