Desert Heather had her head in front where it mattered most when just touching off Desertmore House close home in the Moyvore Whiskey Vault Handicap Hurdle at Kilbeggan.

An impressive winner over course and distance last month, the Declan Queally trained mare looked to have much more on her plate here, having been hit with a subsequent 14lb rise. However, the seven-year-old, who looks to be improving at a rate of knots shrugged off that impost, if only just.

The eventual runner-up led after the second last but was quickly joined by Desert Heather on his outside. The pair had the contest between from that point on but after a big jump at the last, it appeared as though Desertmore House had just done enough.

However, Desert Heather wasn't done with, rallying bravely under Mikey O'Connor to lead on the line.

“We're delighted. I said to Harry the last day that I had picked out this race and as she liked the track we said we'd take our chances,” said Declan Queally.

“Mike said she didn't travel great but she came home well, she's as tough as nails.

“She had won three point-to-points and to win a 30 grand handicap like this is brilliant.

“She won easy last time and you accept that the handicapper gave us 14lb, you take it on the chin and you make a plan afterwards. Luckily she slotted in nicely here, Mike's 5lb took her down the weights and it worked out.

“Obviously it won't be easy from now on but she has two races won and a big handicap so it's great. Harry is delighted as it's his second winner.

“She'll jump a fence, she's a grand mare. She stays well and she has a nice pedigree.”
