Abbeyfeale teenager Paddy Harnett partnered his first winner as Rule The Sea made all to land the @Tipperaryraces Apprentice Handicap in great style.

The Tracey Collins-trained gelding got in as the first reserve but was sent off a 20/1 chance on his first handicap start after four outings in maidens.

Also a first winner for owner Cathy Grassick, the son of Born To Sea kept on well in the straight under Harnett to record a comfortable two and a quarter lengths success. Drombeg Duke took the runner-up spot, with Never Rains and Kinch completing the places in this extended seven furlongs event.

Collins said, “He was working very well at home but, to be honest, I thought he wanted a bit further. He had a very good draw, and we kept it very simple. I told Paddy to jump out good and smart, and he carried out his instruction perfectly.

“It was the horse's first time in a handicap. He showed us plenty at home but he just took a while to mature. I said to Paddy that he wanted a mile or a mile and one, and that if he jumped well not to be afraid to send him and, in fairness, he gave him a super ride for a kid having his first winner. He’s got a future in front of him.”

A delighted Harnett said, “It’s unbelievable. I got a great ride, and thanks to Tracey for giving me the ride. I’m delighted. When I got to the furlong pole, I could hear nothing behind me. I just gave a look back and the lads were two lengths off me and I just put my stick down and rode him hands and heels to the finish.

“I did pony racing for about two years. I learned to ride down in Tom Cooper’s, and he taught me a lot. I’m still in school — today was my first day back in school, in fifth year. I’m based with Andy Slattery in Killenaule, and have learned a load there."
