The Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden at the Curragh saw a very impressive performance from 10/1 newcomer Thunder Moon
This was a sweet success for the O’Brien family. Joseph trains the Zoffany colt for his mother, Anne Marie, and herself and her husband Aidan bred the juvenile under the Whisperview Trading Ltd banner.
Declan McDonogh always looked happy on Thunder Moon, with the benefit of a Dundalk barrier trial success under his belt.
The exciting sort quickened away in the final furlong to beat Colour Sergeant by three and three parts of a length.
Ballydoyle’s well-backed even money favourite Iowa had to settle for fourth.
“I think he's a smart horse. He went to a barrier trial a couple of weeks ago and did it well,” said stable representative Brendan Powell.
“He's typical of a Zoffany, very relaxed and a lovely natured horse. He's got a lot of filling out to do.
“Declan said he didn't even have to hit him. He was just niggling him and as soon as he really grabbed hold of him, gave him a squeeze, he picked up and found that turn of foot. That's a good asset to have.
“He'll make up into a lovely three-year-old. He stays the trip well and please God he's got a good future.”
