Sizing Granite gained compensation for a narrow defeat over course and distance on Thyestes Day when justifying favouritism with some style in the second two-mile maiden hurdle on the card at Gowran Park.

The 11/8 favourite was ridden up with the pace throughout by Andrew Lynch before striking the front early in the straight.

The Milan gelding drew right away on the run-in to record a seven lengths verdict over Desertmore Stream with Moonlight Boy a half-length further adrift in third.

Winning trainer Henry de Bromhead said, “He’s a gorgeous, lovely big horse that we bought at the Derby Sale in Fairyhouse, and he will make a lovely chaser.

“He never really jumped the last day but just got chinned on the line. He looked way more professional today, jumped and travelled well and actually quickened up. The penny seems to have dropped with him.

“He should stay further, and I think he’ll be better on better ground. I won’t be in any hurry with him as he’ll be sent over fences next season.”
