Georgie came through to pick up the pieces as front-runners Pat Garrett and Popaflora wilted in the two mile one handicap chase in Galway.

Danny Mullins started to close on the two horses ahead of him before the second last. He then swept through on Georgie after the last and started to power away on the long climb for home.

Pat Garrett, the 13/8 favourite, and Popaflora (7/1) faded to finish seventh and sixth.

“He seems to like this place. The race was run to suit him although I thought he got there a bit too soon, but he kept on well,” Co Galway trainer Martin Cullinane said.

“He handled the ground better than I thought he would. We’ll give him a week or two and see how he is and we’ll see where we go.”

Georgie landed quite a touch in the betting ring from 9/2 down to Burlington Bertie 100/30 on the off. He was 13/2 this morning.

Outsiders Yeoman (16/1) and El Mondo (14/1) came in second and third, beaten 11 lengths and 19 lengths respectively by the winner.
