Green Dragon quickened smartly on the run-in to score in good style in the two-mile maiden hurdle at Tipperary.
The contest was an interesting betting heat with a late on course plunge on the Charles Byrnes' trained Synchronicity (from 11/2 into 15/8 – as big as 12/1 in morning).
He came under pressure before the straight however and could make no impression in fifth.
Honourable Emperor had been popular before racing, backed from 5/1 into as short as 11/4. He was friendless on track however and returned 6/1. He did look the winner, however, as he hit the front turning for home.
Green Dragon was driven along to challenge him at the second last and landed in front at the final flight.
The Tony Martin-trained gelding (16/1 in morning returned 9/1) found another gear in the closing stages as he pulled away in style to score by six-and-a-half lengths.
Honourable Emperor just held second from 33/1 newcomer Back Before Dawn
Green Dragon had been well held on his three previous outings over hurdles but was encountering much better ground today.
“He had a great run in Punchestown the last day and the better ground brought out the best in him. He showed a big improvement and will keep going now,” said Martin.
