Nine-year-old Lily’s Prince won his fifth race at Dundalk and his ninth all told in the Sevens Cabs And Coaches Rental Ltd Handicap this evening.
Donagh O’Connor was aboard the Strategic Prince gelding for owner Martin Sheridan and trainer Garvan Donnelly.
Just over two and a half lengths split seven of the eight of these, but Lily’s Prince (8/1 — 9/1 — 7/1) pulled out enough to defeat Silk Cravat and Kasbah by a neck and the same.
“At long last. He's been knocking on the door for a long time,” said Donnelly.
“I thought that the handicapper hadn't given him much of a chance because he's an older horse and hasn't won for two years.
“Thank God he's done it tonight. He's always shown that he has plenty of life left in him. He's a fierce genuine horse, there is never an ounce of bother with him and he's as sound as a pound.
“He won this race two years ago and was second in it last year.
“Martin Sheridan is a great supporter of ours and we have another nice filly for him at home by Kodiac.
“Hopefully there is another one for him here. He hops off that surface. We'll give him a couple if weeks to freshen him up, he's an easy horse to train.”
