An eye-catcher last time when making Shane Shortall work through a Fairyhouse contest, Deilginis delivered today in the Rosslare Mares Handicap Hurdle at Wexford. The midlands rider again earned his fee.
Shortall was definitely seen ‘after’ the Joseph O’Brien-trained Deilginis (the Irish name for Dalkey, Dublin) with a circuit to go.
Local hope Trans Wood made the best of her way home in the straight, but she couldn’t resist Martin O’Sullivan’s Flemensfirth victor, the 9/4 favourite, up the inner in the closing stages.
Two and a half lengths split them.
"She made me work for it. She flew home the last day in Fairyhouse and I knew what to expect today, I didn't let her ease up," said Shortall.
"The ground probably wasn't ideal for her, she didn't really let herself down on it.
"She won by two and a half lengths in the end so I'd say the further the better and a little bit of softer ground might help her as well."
