Conal looked a nice stayer in the making when making a winning 'track' debut in the 2m6f maiden hurdle at Punchestown.
Ruby Walsh made the running on the six-year-old and he responded well when tackled by Blessed King before the final flight.
The 3/1 co-favourite galloped on strongly in the closing stages to post a two-length victory over that rival, who was another of the market leaders. The third co-favourite Rollingontheriver fell four out.
Conal had won his sole point-to-point start at Oldtown in March of 2014 and was making his first start today for Dermot McLoughlin.
"Staying chasing will be his job and that's a bonus. He looks to be a nice horse," said McLoughlin.
"Ruby said he travelled and travelled and pick up when he asked him. He kept galloping, loved the conditions and jumps well so it's all positive.
"I'll talk to Mr Conway as I don't know what the initial plans are. We might keep him over hurdles."
