Charlie completes 288/1 double for McConnell & Kierans

Lowtown Charlie completed a 288/1 double for John McConnell and owner Derek Kierans, as he took the finale at Listowel, the Dr Louis O'Carroll Flat Race.

Second in a point-to-point at Kirkstown in February when trained by Stuart Crawford, the son of Ask subsequently changed hands for 70,000 pounds.

Sent off a 16/1 chance today, the five-year-old gelding raced in second under Tom Reilly, recording his first success since August of 2016.

He improved to the front approaching the straight and was soon ridden clear, keeping on well to score easily by ten lengths. Robaddan (8s to 11/2 on-course and from 16s this morning) finished a gallant second under Declan Queally, while Paul Hennessy's Lilac Rose (33/1) was another eleven lengths back in third. Golazo (5/2) attempted to make all but faded once headed and finished fifth, while Glens Melody (5/6f) never looked like winning and was tailed off in eighth.

McConnell and Kierans were earlier on the mark with Play The Game who also obliged at the odds of 16/1.

STEWARDS REPORTS

Mr J.J. Codd, rider of Glens Finale trained by Gordon Elliott, reported to the Clerk of Scales that he was never happy with his mount, that he kept changing his legs possibly as a result of the fast ground conditions after which he left him alone from there on.

The Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board Veterinary Officer examined Glens Finale, trained by Gordon Elliott, at the request of the Stewards and reported the animal to be lame post race.
