Barrogstown Girl overcomes plenty of pre-race drama

There was drama before race five in Clonmel when a large tree fell into the parade ring, blocking the entrance and exit, but thankfully no staff or horses were in that part of the enclosure when the incident happened.

It was Barrogstown Girl proven over further than the extended nine-furlong trip, who took the honours under Neve Bennett in this St Patrick's Well Handicap.

Clear-leader Glencullen looked vulnerable passing the two pole as his lead was whittled away by top-weight Jeaniemacaroney with Barrogstown Girl also taking an interest.

Glencullen veered across the track towards the stands' side yielding a narrow lead to Jeaniemacaroney from Barrogstown Girl outside the final furlong.

Barrogstown Girl was stronger in the final 150 yards, though, and stayed on well to tough it out by half a length at 11/1.

Runner-up Jeaniemacaroney (2/1f) was placed for the fifth time on the Flat and was seven-lengths clear of morning-price-mover Keilah (9/4).

Jarlath Fahey said "Her form was good - we were a little worried about coming down to a tricky track, but she handled it well.

"She was down a bit in distance, but we know she is a fairly sharp filly and were happy with her. She is doing job well and Neve gave her a very cool ride.

"She is owned and bred by my brother Michael and it is great they he is here as he was on holidays the last day she won."
