It was desperate at the end but Red Avenger remains unbeaten for Damian English as on outing number two for the County Dublin yard the 9/2 shot (from 6s) prevailed in the MSS — This One's For You Hylo Handicap at Dundalk.
Red Avenger travelled well in the straight up on the front end under Rory Cleary. Chestnut Fire (15/8 favourite) also moved smoothly but he was towards the rear of the field. Shane Foley had to switch his mount out to get a run, and finish off well as he did it still wasn't sufficient to catch Red Avenger. A nose split them.
"He still retains plenty of his ability, and he got there too soon. Rory said he'll be a right horse in all the good handicaps next year where they will go quick," commented English.
"I think we will try him in a fast track qualifier, and if he wins he can go to Lingfield. He's a tough old horse and I'm lucky to have him."
On his first start for 120 days Captain Joy faded out of it to finish last of the eleven.
The Turf Club Veterinary Officer examined Captain Joy, trained by Tracey Collins, at the request of the Stewards and reported the animal to be post race normal.
