Coney flop still a mystery

Connections of Coney Island remain perplexed by his disappointing performance in last Saturday's Ascot Chase.

Eddie Harty's stable star made an impressive return from almost a year on the sidelines at the Berkshire venue in December, but back in Grade One company, his jumping failed to convince and he was eventually pulled up by Barry Geraghty.

The JP McManus-owned seven-year-old hold entries in the Ryanair Chase and the Timico Gold Cup at the Cheltenham Festival, but plans are fluid at this stage.

Patrick Harty, assistant to his father, said: "He went over in great form and came back in great form. It's hard to explain.

"They talk about the bounce factor and I never really bought into it, but I may have to now. They went a real good gallop over the first few fences, but he should have been able to lie up. In the Drinmore, he was up there all the way.

"We'll see how he is and give him a bit of schooling and see how he jumps at home. I wouldn't rule Cheltenham out, but I wouldn't think he'll be going for the Ryanair."
