Grandmaster Flash (11/4) showed his versatility in terms of distance when winning the DundalkStadium.com Handicap.

The Australia gelding was a winner over two miles at this venue last month but took the half-mile drop back in trip very much in his stride.

Dylan Browne McMonagle rode his mount handy tracking the front-running John Ess and began pushing away entering the straight. Grandmaster Flash hit the front over a furlong out and stayed on well to beat The Mouse Doctor (9/4 fav) by a cosy enough length and a quarter.

It was a third success for the 5-year-old all of which have come at Dundalk and the addition of a tongue-tie for his last two starts seems to have done him no harm at all.

Brendan Powell, assistant to winning trainer Joseph O’Brien, commented: “It was a good performance and he toughed it out well.

“Dylan said he was always half flat out on him over that trip. Ever since he was gelded (in November) he's a genuine horse and he had to be there to battle it out.

“They've all come to him but he said he kept picking up. He keeps doing it and it was a nice strong ride from Dylan.”
