Magheralin Mick made a winning start to his career over flights in the extended two and a half mile maiden hurdle in Sligo.

He travelled strongly and availed of a lovely run through on the inner to lead after two out and had his rivals cooked once he popped the last.

The Shirocco gelding kept on strongly to move clear and won by six lengths in the hands of Luke Dempsey. He was returned at 18/5. Karayaz (125/1) came in second and was two and a half lengths ahead of Beavis (40/1).

This gave Gavin Cromwell a double as Just Jacob took race three at 5/1.

Dempsey said: "I got a grand run around on the inner. Rachael (Blackmore, on Kelly's Birr jumped left at the second last and it opened up for me. If I'd come around them I still probably would have won.

"He jumped well, missed one or two, but on the whole he was very good and he should improve a lot for the experience."

Magheralin Mick had been placed in one of his four bumpers.
