Quaker Island (6/1), placed on his previous couple of starts, stayed on best under substitute rider Denis O’Regan to win the visitwexford.ie Maiden Hurdle.

Intended rider Kevin Sexton had been stood down after a fall from Lucky Tenner in the previous contest and O’Regan produced the 6-year-old by Yeats to dispute the lead two out.

Gaining a narrow lead at the last, the winner kept on well to score by a length and a half from the 3/1 favourite All About Joe

Winning trainer Peter Fahey said: "I'm delighted for his owner Gerry O'Dowd who is a good supporter of the yard and he has a good few horses with me.

"It's unfortunate for Kevin (Sexton). I wasn't chatting to him but he has a suspected leg injury and is gone to hospital in Waterford.

"This horse will step into handicap company now and I think Gerry will have good fun with him during the summer."
