Dermot Weld and Declan McDonogh completed a first and last race double when Sheberghan claimed the concluding ten furlong maiden at Sligo in good style.

5/2 favourite Active Approach soon made the running but was claimed turning for home by the Aga Khan-owned colt.

The 3/1 shot was soon on top and went on to record a comprehensive four-length success. He unshipped McDonogh after the line but no harm was done.

Sheberghan had finished a well held seventh on his sole outing at Navan last month.

McDonogh said, “He was lugging the last furlong when he was on his own and over the years horses do go towards the stable yard a bit (in reference to be unseated after the line).

“I was even saying to Lorcan (Wyer, Clerk of the Course) they could put a running rail around there to guide them.

“As regards the race it went well and he toughed it out. He woke up from the Navan race.”
