FormscanBy Tom Weekes - KILLULTAGH VIC is a hopeful pick to recapture his old brilliance and prove himself a proper staying chaser with a win here. A winner of the Martin Pipe Hurdle at Cheltenham and Grade 1 Novice Stayers Hurdle at Punchetsown (beating Thistlecrack), he was on his way to the top in 2016 only for injury to intervene, having performed a minor miracle to win a Grade 2 novice chase at this venue. Happily, he returned with his old sparkle when winning over hurdles at Punchestown in December and in spite of some poor jumping, will be more suited to fences here and might take all the beating. Our Duke is a proven performer in this division, having impressively won the Irish National from a rating of 153 last April. However he comes here following a dreadful run at Down Royal in November and havign scoped wrong, has also since been operated on for 'kissing spines'. Once in the past, at Thurles in February 2016, he gave another no-show but to his credit bounced back from that effort and it will be interesting to see can he he do likewise today. Anibale Fly himself comes here as an improving handicapper, having easily won the Paddy Power over CD at Christmas, from a rating of 148. He remains something of a dark horse at this level but has been Grade 1 novice chase placed in the past and could be able get involved at the business end today. Outlander, who has also had a 'kissing spines' operation last summer, is a triple-Grade 1 winner and a very capable type on his day. However, from a form point of view, is still a little enigmatic and while he ran a solid Christmas Chase third-placing here in December, has been a little inconsistent in the past which is a concern. Mala Beach won the Troytown Chase from a mark of 148 in November and while he has yet to prove himself in Grade 1 company, has always been well regarded by his trainer but has also has some training setbacks along the way. Djakadam is a dual Grade 1 winner and dual Cheltenham Gold Cup runner-up but hasn't shown his old sparkle this season and, worryingly, is again deserted by Paul Townend today. Minella Rocco (fourth in the Christmas Chase) and Valseur Lido are each very capable types but need to improve a little to win today.
